This Durga puja is dedicated to two women saints, both embodiments of the Divine Mother, Mata Amritanandamayi, "Ammachi" who is still with us on earth and Sri Anandamayi Ma who left the body in 1982. Ammachi and Ram Dass "Love is a sudden uprising in the heart... an unavoidable, unobstructable longing for oneness." Ammachi   "As you love your own body, so regard everyone as equal to your own body. When the Supreme Experience supervenes, everyone's service is revealed as one's own service. Call it a bird, an insect, an animal or a man, call it by any name you please, one serves one's own Self in every one of them." Sri Anandamayi Ma   Sri Swami Sivananda says, "The Durga Puja is celebrated in various parts of India in different styles. But the one basic aim of this celebration is to propitiate Shakti, the Goddess in Her aspect as Power, to bestow upon man all wealth, auspiciousness, prosperity, knowledge (both sacred and secular), and all other potent powers. Whatever be the particular or special request that everyone may put before the Goddess, whatever boon may be asked of Her, the one thing behind all these is propitiation, worship and linking oneself with Her. There is no other aim. This is being effected consciously or unconsciously. Everyone is blessed with Her loving mercy and is protected by Her."   This is the annual celebration related to the sacred text, THE DEVI MAHATMYAM, "Glory to the Great Goddess" from which I received several transmissions. Ganesha is the beloved elephant-headed god of Hindu tradition. He is the Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles. He is also worshipped as the god of education, knowledge, wisdom and wealth. He is worshipped, or at least remembered, in the beginning of any auspicious performance for blessings and auspiciousness. Ganesha or Ganapati, predates the Vedic era, and according to author, Amarananda Bhairavan, goes back to a time when a tribal group, "The Matangas" based their own culture on the matriarchal society of elephants and worshipped the Goddess as Matangi.

Yes, the day before New Year's Eve is the New Moon. In traditional Hindu Goddess worship, Kali Puja is performed on the new moon day.

We will start around 6:00 pm with some chanting and then a Ganesh puja. Kali puja will start at approximately 7:00. Guests may arrive during the ceremony. We will plan on eating around 8:00 pm. Guests are encouraged to bring flowers and fruit to be offering during the puja. Donations are most welcome. I will be preparing vegetarian Indian food, so I need to know how many will come.
